Happy Weekend!
This week was a long week and we had a lot happening in
Grade 1. We did a lot of work and it was fantastic to listen to all students
talk about the learner profile attributes and how they were “trying their best”
to live it! It is sometimes hard to be balanced and reflective as well as
principled, but I am proud to say that all students in 1A have been working on
and living these principles not just in school but at home as well.
This is our Learner Profile Bulleting Board- I am very proud
of all of our kiddies.
In Language Arts, we have been working on our writing
skills- with particular focus on word Choice- Describing words, and words that
describe our feelings. We discovered that there are more different words we can
use to describe exactly what we are feeling rather than just “good” or “bad”.
Expanding our vocabulary has been lots of fun and we hope to continue working
on this over the rest of the year. We loved reading in groups, thanks you Ms.
Pavitra for coming in and working with us while we read and write our
reflective paragraphs. We have also been working on recounts. As I write this
it is amazing how much our first graders can achieve in a week and retain all
the information we discover together J
Math has been a lot of fun this week- apart from learning
about division and multiplication while working with cubes and making big
groups as well as dividing those groups into equal share, we began talking
about time using the calendar. Students were amazed that we have 365 days in a
year and that every 4 years we have 366 days. We also discussed how many days
are there in a week, if there are patterns we can see in the number of days in
each month and how many weeks there are in a month. As we continue working on
these concepts, it would be fantastic to talk about them at home. We will soon
be introducing the concept of time- telling time by the hour! Talking about AM
and PM. Minutes in an hour, how many hours in a day! If you would like to come
in and join in the fun please let me know J
In Social Studies, we have begun presenting our family
tress, and sharing our family story. Where we come from, where we were born,
and how many siblings we have. We look forward to more presentations this week.
In Science- we began our new unit on Materials and
Properties; our KWL session was wonderful- here are the results of what we
know about Materials and what we would like to know about Materials.
We have also been reviewing our senses as we are using describing
words when we write.
