A quick reminder that this week is a short week- HOLIDAY ON THURSDAY 27 FEB 2014 and FRIDAY 28 FEB 2014!

The Things we learn when we have fun in School!

Good Afternoon Everyone!

What a quick week this has been. Truly, time flies when we are having fun. This week in Grade 1 we have been doing a lot of learning. We are pleased to welcome another new student to our Grade 1 classroom!

We continue our exploration of word choice to make our writing better- we love using new word and making them our words! We reviewed what word choice is and have been trying our best to use words to help us write with details. We continue to work on word choice and will begin learning a new writing genre- Report Writing! Over the course of the next two to three weeks, we will be discussing what Reports are and how we write a report. Our plan is to be able to research and write about our Favourite Wild Animals.
Word Choice.. Verbs... naming words... describing words...
feeling words.... Oh Me! Oh My!
Having Ms. Pavitra here is such fun.. we even had a discussion over
what group she would be reading with next week! Thank you
for coming to help us.
We listen to stories and help each other read!
We love to write.
In math, we continue working on time- reading time to the hour and half an hour has been fun. Although it is a difficult concept, my students are beginning to get the hang of reading an analogue clock. We will continue to work on reading time quarter past the hour, and quarter to the hour!
Digital clocks are easier than Analogue Clocks! If only we
all only used Digital Clocks!
This is 7 O'Clock!
Now... what is 10:30 look like again?!?!?
This is easy stuff as long as I concentrate!
We enjoy working with clocks!
We love Science, and have been discussing Materials- their uses and their properties. We enjoyed asking questions and clarifying our ideas. We even went on to discuss what solids, liquids and gases were. We had fun watching the Brainpop video to help us understand these concepts and were able to then put all that knowledge to use when we had to identify different materials.

We loved discussion and naming the materials!
Anne and Moby helping us understand difficult concepts!
Solids, Liquids and Gases
Filling our balloons with gas and playing with then...
In Science, we have discussed Rules, Families and Responsibilities, as well as consequences. We had begun talking about Communities- jobs people have in the communities and what we would like to be when we grow up!
What We want to be wen we grow up!
We had a super fun Wednesday- participating in the walk-a-thin and I am very proud of all our kiddies as they ran and walked with such enthusiasm. Thank you for sponsoring them to run and walk!
Ready! Set! and Waiting to Go! All for a good cause.
We were invited to visit with the JK class and we had a wonderful time listening to their presentations on Wild Animals, having them read the books they made to us and listening to how they made a model zoo! Thank you JK for inviting us!
WOW! the things we learn from the little ones!

Learning the week of Valentines Day an 100 days of School Celebrations!

Happy Sunday,

Looking through all the pictures we took over the past week amazes me as all our students have been working so hard and have accomplished so much. They rise to the challenge everyday and I become more and more proud of them as the days go by.

We did lots of work leading up to Friday- February 14th- our day of celebrating love for each other and being 100 days smarter.

In Language Arts we continue to work on Word choice; recounts, guided reading and then reflecting on the reading in small groups. Students love to show how they read and the new vocabulary they can incorporate in their writing.

In Science, we continue to review as well as work on Materials. This week, we went outside to look at different materials around the elementary courtyard. It was a fun activity as we had to really think about what the materials were made of and what they were used for... we love going outside and experiencing all that we have learned in theory- we try to put it into practice.

We completed our family tree presentations this week with more interesting facts about families- we discovered that families are similar in many ways, however, we come from different places and have lived all over the world but we are still the same- we love our families, our families protect us and we go on new adventures with our families.

In Maths, we have begun discussing time- to the hour as well as working on our number sense problems- word problems as well as 2 digit addition with our regrouping (carrying over)... all students loved the challenge and it was amazing to watch students work on their math skills with such joy!

We had our Wednesday Assembly and we loved watching and participating in the Moose Dance- We had students who got apples for being RISK TAKERS and a student for winning the literacy day writing competition- Well Done!

This week, Students got time to play and work together after they completed their work- they did lots of fun things in class and play well with each other-

So much learning has taken place this past week and with the new week coming around far too quickly ;-) we look forward to learning ad reviewing more new things in Grade 1A!

I hope you have  a wonderful week ahead and both Ms. Abhaya and Myself look forward to seeing all our students on Monday!

Happy and Restful Sunday Everyone!

A week of celebrations! 100 Days of School and Valentines Day!

Good evening,

Oh what a wonderful week of fun learning culminating in a wonderful celebration of 100 days of school. Celebrating 100 days of school! We are 100 days smarter and are proud of it.

Thank you moms for coming in making us pizzas, rice Krispy treats and teaching us how to make shapes out of our balloons.

We loved watching the movie Frozen and it is a great way to start off science lessons.... Students built structures out of cups and it was amazing to watch how wonderfully they worked as a team- granted it took a team longer to start off than the other team- we loved our crowns and estimated using the 100 chain. We also made a decision to continue completing the 100 chain to see how many days there are I'm the school year!

Here are a few pictures of all the different things we did on Friday Celebrating 100 Days of school!
Reasons we LOVE coming to School!
We are definitely 100 days and more Smarter!
