Activity- Candle Making

On monday, we are learning about Chanukah and are making candles.

We will need your help with them, if you have any old tins (baked beans, soup cans, fruit cans) please send them in with your children so that we may use them as we make candles.

We will make our candles after lunch- if moms would like to join us and help us out, please send me and email and we will be very very happy to have you with us.

Author Visit

To tie in to our celebrations of National Library week, we had a German Author and Illustrator come in and do a workshop with our students. Students discussed their ideas, and what sketches were; they discussed how to write stories and it was wonderful to watch each child show their creativity as they were asked to write and illustrate their own stories. They were as proud of their achievements as I am of them :-)

Language Arts- Ideas

In Langauge Arts, we have been discussing IDEAS! We have talked about what ideas are and where we can get them from. We discussed how a little idea can grow into a big idea- each student came up with ideas of what they could write about and how to write an idea. We also discussed paragraphs, how each paragraph is about one thing, we have some awesome stories that were written- I will share them once they are all done and ready to be displayed.

I am very proud of our kiddies and they have brilliant ideas and are most enthusiastic about writing- way to go Grade 1A.

Reading with the JK's

Grade 1 reads with the junior kindergarteners and we are growing in confidence as we read more and more. The JK's love having us read to them and this week, we went to their class and had lots of fun reading and singing songs. Thank you JK for having us.

Science- Plants

We started our new Unit on Plants and have begun to grow our own plants. We went on a nature walk at school and were amazed to find Papaya Trees, Indian Basil, Lemon Trees, and Fig Trees. We loved exploring our environment.

We had a little farewell party for her on Monday and we made cards and had a wonderful cake (thank you moms for the cake)

Science- Digestive System - Making Poo!

I am sure you your children were talking about making poo all week! well, we made it and it was
priceless.

We also had one of our Moms come into class and talk to us about the human body (we love having you come in and talk with us and we love learning from you) Thank you!!!!!
No words can describe the fun we had and the learning that took place! It was truly wonderful watching and listening to the different conversations and how each child applied what they had learned in science.

We talked about interdependency and how we depend on so many things to live.... our conversations digressed to flying and gravity! I have a few videos that I need to edit and will update shortly! the conversations were fantastic and I am truly blessed everyday to see the way each student learns and absorbs what they have learned- students are beginning to question and look for answers not just to their teachers but to their peers as well. This is how learning truly takes place.
Learning about the Skull!
Thank you for coming in to talk with us!

Digestive System - Show and share!

All ready to make poo!

Centers

On Day 6 we have our centres- Centres is a time for students to work together in 3 groups, on 3 different activities, it is a time for us to sit with each student and listen and learn from them as they learn with us everyday!

This week, we had 3 centres- each centre has a different activity and students move from one centre to another centre after 10 minutes at each activity.

This week we had our iPad centre (Thank you Shwa!), we had a math (tangram centre) and a writing centre. Each week we will try and have different activities that students can do at the centres. It is a great way for students to learn how to manage time and a wonderful way of working as a team.

Here are lots of pictures!

Math

In Math, we continue our work with number sense and data management. Students did a survey, tallied their results and drew graphs of their results. It was wonderful watching and listening them ask questions and applying what they have learned in class.

Langauge Arts

We love learning new things- this week, students began learning about paragraphs and wrote paragraphs in groups. They got to present them to their classmates and enjoyed sharing all they knew.
Students also love to read and are getting better and better at reading. They are proud of the different books they read and love reading them out to each other and to themselves.

Here are a few pictures.
